These projects takes into account the particular types of pathologies seen in the region and which require particular attention. After on site evaluation of social/health needs specific studies are created to underline the rehabilitation requirements to cover the needs. All projects follow the NMT Volonteer Projects underlying aim to reduce the poverty/disbility viscous cycle through improving mobility. Specific NMT rehabilitation projects assist to:

  • reduce Neuropathic Pain in patients after trauma

  • reduce phantom pain in patients with traumatic amputations

  • improve mobility in patients with stroke, especially in young patients under the age of 10

  • be considered a main treatment for facial paralysis from central nervous system trauma, viral or cold origin

  • integrate with existing treatment methods in the long term rehabilitation of cerebal palsy

  • intergrate with existing treatment methods in the long term rehabilitation of club foot as well continous treatment for patients over 5 years old

  • help treatment of autism by improving attention and learning skills

  • improve quality of life issues.

  • reduce physical and post traumatic stress disorders with torture victims

Chronic lower back pain remains one on the most requested treatments in all hospitals not only in Ethiopia but worldwide. Chronic lower back pain is one of the most frequent cause of lower limb motor dysfunction and reduced autonomy in aging. Poor postural control and abnormal gait are common features of these patients. Lower back pain in aging is coupled with impaired proprioception contribute to posture and gait anomalies. Reduced working ability and reduced overall autonomy in the working age is a common feature in countries that rely on manual labour.

Stroke is an injury to the brain. There is a growing number of young patients under the age of 10 who are presenting in hospitals with single sided paralysis due to jeuvinile stroke conditions. Although the injury is neurological in nature, it produces effects to the body that impair movement, coordination, balance and posture. There are various types of stroke with a different involvement of lower and upper limbs. This study focuses on the upper limb, its involvement limits reaching, grasping and object manipulation, interfering also with everyday activities and quality of life.

Club foot is a devistating disability that has been widely studied and many countries have implimented corrective treatments for children from an early age. The are 2 main treatments which cover corrective surgery and corrective splinting and casting. Surgery techniques often require follow-up surgery to continue the lengthening of muscle and tendon fibre during the growing years. Casting is concentrated in the early years upto 5 years old. Evan so, these 2 techniques are considered the gold standard – recurring mal alignment problems and returning club foot remains a significant problem for most services dealing with Club foot. An estimated 600 children under the age of 3 are in treatment in Kinshasa.

This project is part of a multicentered unified Indonesian stroke treatment program.

Stroke is a devistating disability that may be divided into 2 aspects ischemic, due to lack of blood flow, and hemorrhagic, due to internal bleeding. the major risk factor universally recognized is cardiovascular malfunctioning due to life style and eating tendencies. Smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, modern day stress factors and a sedentary life style are all well know causes of stroke and age is not a protective factor when preventing stroke outcome. In many countries the incidence of juvenile and young age stroke is on the increase. Some factors maybe controlled and others may not in our complex society.  All stroke programs have difficulty in pursuing the return of normal functioning moving towards a neuro-motor rehabilitation treatment over time. Costs are elevated for long term care, real positive outcomes are often difficult to achieve and the extremely high percentage of patients that do not recover from stroke call for new and innovative therapies that can follow patients over time. NeuroMuscular Taping is a cost effective means of improving overall neuro-rehabilitation outcomes. This project will train medical professionals and inform stroke patient associations and medical staff on the advantages of low cost continual care for stroke. Project start date 2017.

Bell’s palsy is quite common in tropical and developing countries where there are limited therapy options to reduce symptoms. The first priority in treating Bell’s palsy is to eliminate the source of nerve damage as quickly as possible. The disease is a consequence of nerve inflammation and minor/major nerve compression over a short time period which can result in mild and temporary damage. As time goes on with continuing, constant or increasing compression and without specific treatment, damage to the nerve may also increase. NeuroMuscular Taping (NMT) is a therapeutic resource which helps to reduce pain and inflammation, increasing blood circulation to weak muscles while reducing overall recovery time. Starting from the first NMT application the patient presents an increase of forehead wrinkles, induced eyelid movement and an improvement of lips and mouth coordination and capacity. The project is to create specific training for occupational therapists to assist patients in low income areas of Indonesia.
